OPHELIA
Sep 27, 2019–Feb 16, 2020
Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken, Saarbrücken
The Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken presents OPHELIA, a solo exhibition by Nadja Verena Marcin. The centerpiece of the exhibition is the live performance OPHELIA in which Marcin, dressed in a white gown, submerges herself in a water-filled tank while reciting Daniil Kharms’ text The Werld. This striking act explores human perception, the fragility of the individual, and the destructive impact of environmental degradation, merging performance, literature, and ecological reflection.
After the live performance, a video installation of the piece remains on view, offering visitors an immersive experience that invites contemplation of vulnerability, isolation, and humanity’s relationship to the natural world.
In addition to the performance and video installation, Marcin presents a series of photographs – Bride, Jedi, and Cinema Pirata, and videos – How to Undress in Front of Your Husband and Zero Gravity – in which she appears as performer, using humor and critical commentary to interrogate conventional portrayals of women in popular culture.
Her solo exhibition runs concurrently with a solo presentation by Iranian artist Parastou Forouhar, together transforming the museum into a space for interdisciplinary and cross-cultural dialogue, where art, literature, and ecological consciousness intersect.
