Jedi
2015
Photography, C-Print, 110 x 194.5 cm (43.3 x 76.6 in)
El Fuerte de Samaipata, Bolivia
The photograph “Jedi” was taken at El Fuerte de Samaipata, a historic site once utilized by the Guarani and Inca and in 1998 designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adorned with a cactus sword and ninja attire reminiscent of the Jedi knights from the Star Wars universe, Marcin presents herself as a resilient fighter and intrepid traveler and evokes the theme of women’s empowerment. While the authority’s preservation of the location aims to maintain its authenticity, Marcin’s performance symbolizes a departure from traditional narratives, signaling the evolution and transformation of historical values.
