Street
2007
Video, HDV, 6.02 min
Berlin, Germany
In Street, nine guerrilla performances are carried out in public spaces across Berlin and documented through video and photography. Each performance takes a fundamental human right as its starting point and humorously challenges it through absurd actions, such as staging a real bank robbery with a banana, visiting the Mercedes-Benz headquarters blindfolded while carrying an oversized fabric penis, or acting as a prehistoric woman in Berlin Zoo who emits strange, gurgling noises while confronting and chasing visitors. Other performances include a bikini-clad figure quoting Hitler’s infamous speeches while covered in chocolate pudding, attempting to breach the Reichstag.
The performances reference historical events while critiquing the blatant structures of consumer society and its battlefields. Using human rights as a pretext, they expose the gap between law and action in the eyes of the observer, highlighting the contradictions inherent in modern societal norms.
