I know why the caged bird sings, a group exhibition curated by Stef Van Bellingen, is on view at WARP, Contemporary Art Platform in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, from Apr 8 – May 8, 2022. The exhibition explores themes of freedom, confinement, and creativity, with a focus on the relationship between humans, animals, and nature. Inspired by both Eastern and Western sources, it uses the metaphor of birds and flight to examine physical and mental liberation. Drawing from Abbey Lincoln’s song, the exhibition reflects on how creativity can thrive even in restrictive circumstances.

The exhibition features works by Ignace Cami, Sylvie Crutelle, Honoré d’O, Roni Horn, Gaëlle Leenhardt, Nadja Verena Marcin, Linda Jasmin Mayer, and Migrating Heritage – Shatila, amongst others. These artists address the tensions between freedom and psychological confinement, offering diverse perspectives on the human struggle for self-expression and liberation. Through their art, they invite viewers to engage with the idea of personal and societal boundaries, while drawing on historical and contemporary themes of flight, birds, and the metaphorical cages that define and limit human experience.
