On April 24 and May 17, 2023, the University of Potsdam’s Digitalvilla, located near the Griebnitzsee campus, will host two events featuring #SOPHYGRAY, a feminist chatbot developed by artist Nadja Verena Marcin. In collaboration with PLATFORM GLITCH AESTHETICS, the Institute of Business Informatics, Processes, and Systems invites the public to join in artistic conversations, a digital writing workshop, and lecture performances. The April 24 event will feature an opening, premiering a new print edition of a video still from the #SOPHYGRAY performance, presented as a Fine Art Edition. Marcin will also give a keynote lecture on the artistic concept and unique character of #SOPHYGRAY in the context of feminist deconstruction and reconstruction.

In her keynote lecture on April 24, Nadja Verena Marcin will discuss the artistic concept and unique character of her feminist chatbot, #SOPHYGRAY, within the framework of feminist deconstruction and reconstruction. The project is described by curator Verena Voigt as having a “magical aloofness, reserve, and intellectuality,” with glitchy moments that surprise users through shifts in speech and expression. Drawing comparisons to HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey, #SOPHYGRAY challenges digital norms and critiques gender biases in AI. The lecture is part of a collaboration with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Norbert Gronau and Kunstfonds NEUSTART Kultur, exploring glitch aesthetics in digital art.
