Zero Gravity
Dec 19, 2013–Jan 11, 2014
532 Gallery Thomas Jaeckel, New York
The solo exhibition Zero Gravity premieres the video Zero Gravity (2013) alongside Triple F (2013) at 532 Gallery in New York during the fifth edition of PERFORMA, situating Marcin’s practice within a broader conversation on performance, cinema, and science. The exhibition positions her work within a cultural moment that blurs the boundaries between art, cinema, and scientific procedure, asking how technologies and architectures script human self-invention.
The video Triple F unfolds a turbulent near-future in which mind–body relations slip beyond their usual controls. Inspired by the 1976 science-fiction film Logan’s Run, Triple F stages a world governed by thought through three female protagonists, filmed across a neo-Renaissance castle, a 1970s shopping mall, and a historic brewery—sites that become active agents in the drama of human design.
In Zero Gravity, Marcin performs weightlessly inside a jet over Florida, dressed as an astronaut and reciting Nietzsche’s The Gay Science (1882) and its declaration that “God is dead.” Her performance connects the philosopher’s reflections on the loss of faith and meaning with the physical experience of floating in zero gravity. The contrast between Nietzsche’s heavy existential message and Marcin’s euphoric, endorphin-driven state highlights the tension between spiritual emptiness and fleeting happiness in modern society. By embodying both freedom and disorientation, Marcin symbolizes humanity’s search for deeper fulfillment in a world of endless consumption and momentary pleasure. Through this performance, she invites a rediscovery of genuine emotion, inner voice, and authentic desire.
Alongside the videos, editions of video stills, drawings of the protagonists in Triple F, and costumes were on display. Production support for Triple F (2013) was provided by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW in Düsseldorf. Zero Gravity (2013) was realized with the kind support of Aurora Aerospace in Tampa (USA) and WARP Contemporary Art Platform in Sint-Niklaas (Belgium).
