Curated by Stef Van Bellingen, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is on view at WARP, Contemporary Art Platform in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, from April 8–May 8, 2022. The group exhibition explores freedom, confinement, and creativity with a focus on the relationship between humans, animals, and nature. Drawing from Abbey Lincoln’s song, inspired by both Eastern and Western sources, it uses the metaphor of birds and flight to examine physical and mental liberation.

Featuring artists such as Ignace Cami, Sylvie Crutelle, Honoré d’O, Roni Horn, Gaëlle Leenhardt, Nadja Verena Marcin, Linda Jasmin Mayer, and Migrating Heritage – Shatila, the exhibition reflects on the tension between psychological confinement and the human desire for liberation. The works highlight personal and societal boundaries, inviting viewers to consider how creativity endures—even within cages.
